Ian Rutter - Notes from your friends

The 41 Club toast is "Continued Friendship", and most members carry on the friendships we first make in Round Table and take them on right through our lives. Ian joined Round Table very late in 1980, and subsequently moved on to 41 Club - AKA Shirley Late Knights - and not long afterwards became Chairman in 1987-88.

Ian was one of those people for who the motto meant turning up at most Round Table meetings even after he had officially left, and passing on his comment about 'how things should be done' and 'they were done differently when I was in Table'. He was invariably accompanied in those times by Ian Partridge and they both caused many moments of amusement, usually at the expense (and exasperation!) of the Chairman!

Below are the notes and anecdotes received so far:

From Ian Partridge

Dear Chris

It is with regret that I have to advise that Ian passed away in his sleep on Friday night (4th September 2009). He had been suffering with high blood pressure for some time but his death was totally unexpected.

Ian joined Shirley table late in life in 1980. He subsequently joined Shirley 41 Club and became Chairman in 1987-88. It is some years since Ian attended 41 Club but I am sure he will be remembered fondly by many from his era.

Ian leaves 2 daughters from his first marriage and 3 stepchildren with his second wife Janet.

Unfortunately I am away on holiday until 23rd September and have asked Ian's wife Janet to let Bryan know the funeral arrangements. Could you advise 41 Club members in the meantime please.

Regards

Ian

I certainly remember Ian from Round Table, but I also actually knew him before I joined, as he worked at the same British Gas office where I worked. At the time he was working as a Shift Controller in the Grid Control Room, which meant he was in charge of and controlled all the flows of gas around the entire area covered by West Midlands Gas, which spanned from as far north as Crewe, west to Church Stretton, south to Worcester and Hereford, east to Rugby, from there to Hinckley, Lichfield, Stone, Stoke, and back to Crewe, and all towns and cities bounded by that area. From what I recall he really enjoyed that job.

As I joined Table he was already in 41 Club, but kept appearing with Ian Partridge as something of a 'double act', passing on their 'wisdom' to all and sundry, but often just between themselves but VERY LOUDLY, much to everyone's amusement!

Ian was Chairman of Shirley Late Knights in 1987-88 and I remember him being a regular attendee at that time, and for several subsequent years, and was often good for a humorous moment or two. I am sure there are many of our members who will remember him from this time. I know he was still in touch with many. If I recall correctly he has attended several of our ‘Friends’ nights and one or two other events in recent years.

From Barry Durman

My memories of Ian are that he and Ian Partridge used to come to Table meetings after the meal at the Red Lion in Knowle, where we met for a few years.  They were already 41ers in 1983-5 I think.

They used to sit on the end, get a couple of pints down and talk like the two guys on the Muppets – Waldorf & Statler. They were always amusing and occasionally serious. Ian P was the joker and Ian R the fall guy. At least that is how I remember it.

Suggest you all (addressed to Tablers) enjoy your Tabling – before long you’ll be in 41 and hearing news of fellow past Tablers dying – scares the s**t out of you.

Barry
